criminal defense florida

Ever since the "war on drugs" began in the 1980's, the government has aggressively pursued drug offenders and pushed for maximum convictions. Drug crimes are generally considered "gateway crimes" that can ultimately lead to other types of crimes including robberies, burglaries, as well as violent and sexual crimes. And politically speaking, big drug busts mean big publicity for prosecutors and the State or Federal agencies involved.

People involved in the distribution or possession of drugs are huge targets of prosecutors because convictions for drug crimes tend to be easier to get than other types of crimes. The widespread use of drugs in this country leads many to believe that drug charges are minor, "victimless" crimes.

In reality, crimes involving drugs have some of the most aggressive sentencing guidelines in the criminal justice system. Even minor drug possession charges can result in a permanent criminal record which can lead to loss of your drivers' license and difficulty in keeping or getting jobs. Even more significant, convictions for possession of controlled substances or for selling and/or trafficking drugs can result in mandatory sentencing guidelines with long prison times. This is why all drug charges must be fought aggressively, with a skilled and dynamic defense.

Defenses

Typically ,the most common strategy with defense of drug crimes is to get the charges substantially reduced or dismissed without going to trial. Strategies in the pre-trial phase of a drug charge usually involves the suppression or handling of evidence. This requires much more than just cursory knowledge of the law. It requires precise experience in drug related defense strategies, coupled with various experts who can provide the research and potential testimony necessary for a successful defense.
